
While Orkney is fairly remote from the turmoil of modern life it is easier and quicker to access than one may think.
Air
A selection of flights are available daily from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Shetland.
Sea
You can travel by car to catch a new catamaran ferry from the Gills Bay Ferry Terminal in Caithness to St Margaret’s Hope in South Ronaldsay, Orkney. Alternatively, you can reach Orkney by car using the Northlink Ferry from Scrabster Ferry Terminal in Caithness to Stromness or from Aberdeen to the Hatston Ferry Terminal on the outskirts of Kirkwall.
Train
You can travel by train from all the main Scottish railway stations to Thurso in Caithness, or to Aberdeen, and use Northlink Ferries to travel as foot passengers to Orkney
Bus
Bus connections are available to all the ferry operators mentioned above with the addition of John o’Groats Ferries, who provide a passenger only service from May to September.
Travel to Orkney
From Kirkwall Airport
From the car park at Kirkwall Airport, turn right at the junction with the main road and follow the A960 for approx 4 miles (6 or 7 Km) until you reach Kirkwall. On reaching Kirkwall, the A960 leads on to the Deerness Road followed by Bignold Park Road. Watch for street signs on the left stating Rope Walk, Easdale Loan and Claymore Brae. Approx 0.1 miles Turn right at this junction on to The Meadows and continue downhill, past the school on your left, and then uphill, past Reid Crescent on your right, until you reach the junction with Berstane road on your right. Turn right here and continue past Springfield Drive and Linklater Drive until you reach Viewfield Drive, and Sanderlay Guest House, on your left.
From the Stromness Ferry Terminal
On leaving the ferry, turn right and follow Ferry Road on to the A965 which leads to Kirkwall. This road is approx 15 miles long and passes through the villages of Stenness and Finstown on the way. Continue straight through the first three roundabouts, past the harbour area, and turn right at the fourth which is signposted Shore Street Roundabout. Continue on St Cathrines Place for a short distance and turn left on to East Road. After another short distance, veer right on to Berstane road and continue for approx 0.4miles (0.6 Km) until you see a sign on your left indication Berstane Road again. Turn left at that junction and continue past Springfield Drive and Linklater Drive until you reach Viewfield Drive, and Sanderlay Guest House, on your left.
From the Ferry in St Margaret's Hope
After leaving the ferry, continue through the village of St Margaret’s Hope until you reach the junction with the A961. Turn left at this junction and continue approx 15 miles (approx 24 Km), to Kirkwall. This road takes you across four causeways (the Churchhill Barriers) and through St Mary’s Village. On reaching Kirkwall, go past the Highland Park Distillery continue for a short distance until the road turns sharply to the left. Turn right at this junction and continue to the junction with Bignold Park Road. Turn right and drive for a very short distance before turning left on to the Meadows. Continue downhill, past the school on your left, and then uphill, past Reid Crescent on your right, until you reach the junction with Berstane road on your right. Turn right here and continue past Springfield Drive and Linklater Drive until you reach Viewfield Drive, and Sanderlay Guest House, on your left.
From Hatston Ferry Terminal
On leaving the ferry, drive for a quarter mile approx and then turn left. Drive until you reach the Roundabout and turn left towards Kirkwall Harbour. Continue straight through the next two roundabouts, past the harbour area, and then turn right on to St Cathrine’s Place at the Shore Street Roundabout (signposted). Continue on St Cathrine’s Place for a short distance and turn left on to East Road. After another short distance, veer right on to Berstane road and continue for approx 0.4miles (0.6 Km) until you see a sign on your left indicating Berstane Road again. Turn left at that junction and continue past Springfield Drive and Linklater Drive until you reach Viewfield Drive, and Sanderlay Guest House, on your left.
